The Impact of Health Care Legislation on Small Business

Health care reform legislation has been winding its way through congress over the last couple of months. All the associated partisan lobbying, bickering and complaining makes it hard to keep up with the actual legislative.

Thankfully, several sources have put together summaries of the proposed bills:

1.  Business Week has a nice summary - sourced from Kaiser Health News - comparing the main health care proposals.

2.  Business Week has another story showing how the 3 main proposals will impact the self-employed, small employers and larger employers.

3.  Small Business Trends weighs in with a summary of the proposed House bill. The information is based on a analysis by the Small Business Entrepreneurship Council.

There is still a long way to go before a health care reform bill is passed. And I continue to think there is a good chance health care legislation will not be passed this year. The recent Congressional Budget Office analysis and testimony provides plenty of fodder for those opposed to reform. Key quote from the CBO's budget director:

We do not see the sort of fundamental changes that would be necessary to reduce the trajectory of federal health spending by a significant amount. On the contrary, the legislation significantly expands the federal responsibility.
