Its a sad truth that North Carolina has one of the highest (fourth, I believe) unemployment rates. And the relief is not coming from large enterprises, but mostly from small companies. Greg Hyer, on his LinkingRaleighNC website just pointed out that there are 2.7M really small (i.e. employing 1-4 people) businesses in the US. He then goes on to list an interesting Tweet history on a 12 Step Twitter program for small business. Twitter is something any small or startup business should embrace; its a great equalizer since followers are based on your content rather than your media dollars.
There are some freebies (aka “help”) out there for job seekers. Again on LinkingRaleighNC, there is the offer for free jobpostings, good until NC unemployment drops to 6%. And if you’re a jobseeker, you should belong to LinkingRaleighNC, its probably the strongest professional networking group focused on the Triangle (its free!).
And there’s another freebie out there that jobseekers should consider…. Brian Russell of Carrboro Creative Coworking has publicly extended an offer for the month of May to use a free coworking space with wifi and coffee at no charge. It's first-come, first-served. But consider this, its not just a desk and a cup of coffee. Co-working spaces are great for networking WHILE you’re being productive. Even if you pop in for just a few hours, you’re bound to meet some people, make a contact, get some free advice. And you’ll probably meet some entrepreneurs, startup guys, freelancers, etc. When you’re job seeking you need to keep the network going more than ever, and you won’t do that at your kitchen table. And there are some other great events going on at CCC as well, including free job coaching and resume editing.
