My seven-year-old goes to a private school here in Dallas, and while he is the in the advance reading group, his teacher won’t allow him to check out any book he wants from the library. I was surprised. He wants to read historical non-fiction (don’t ask me why), but the content is clearly above his 4th grade reading level. As a technology junkie I bought the second generation Kindle figuring I would use it to read newspapers and periodicals I didn’t want to carry around.
When my Kindle arrived, Ethan asked what it was and I explained it was an electronic device designed to replace regular books. He asked if it had a book about Teddy Roosevelt and I let him do a search. He found a biography and asked if he could download it - it was only $4.95 so I agreed. I knew it was above his reading level, but what the heck. He has spent the last three days reading about Teddy instead of watching TV, playing on the computer or playing Xbox.
My Kindle is now Ethan’s Kindle. What an amazing device. My seven-year- old can download any book and read it without leaving the house. We live in amazing times - oh to be seven again. Thanks Amazon.
