On If Collaboration is the Killer App for Bussiness

Thanks for the comment Peter. I wasn't aware that I was drinking Salesforce's particular flavor of Kool-Aid. I'm a big fan of Chesborough and have Open Business Model and Open Innovation here in my work bookcase. I'm also familiar with the work that Deb Schultz (now at The Altimiter Group) was doing at P&G around customer centric product research, are there other P&G activities I should look at, they do a lot.

Tech is never the answer to human behavior but I believe that this new approach to tech allows collaboration at a scale we've never had before. I don't know what type of Intranet Boeing has (I'm here in Seattle I could probably ask my neighbor) but if it's like most intranets they don't provide the features LinkedIn or facebook do and the fact that their closed environments inherently have less value (based on connections/nodes) for collaboration.

We've built our business models to achieve scale and sacrificed intimacy. We can now have both.

I agree that few companies get social but those that do will achieve a competitive advantage. Just like it took companies a long time to optimize their business for the Internet (and many still aren't there) companies need to stop optimizing social media for their business and optimize their business for social media.

It won't happen soon but I believe (Strawberry-Kiwi flavored Kool-Aid in hand) that it will happen and the companies that realize we can't do that with the same processes we put in place when people had actual inboxes and inter-office mail they'll make some pretty radical changes and benefit because of it.
