However, earning a higher degree while working is no easy feat – when you’re working full-time, returning to school carries with it the one-two punch of a killer time crunch and a hefty tuition bill.

That’s why online degree programs are so appealing. For professionals in the business sector, earning a specialized MBA will increase the opportunity to advance in (and keep) their jobs. Organizational Leadership is a great specialty to add to a less-than-stellar resume, but if you choose the wrong MBA program, it can have the opposite effect.

Online schools were once fly-by-night institutions, and tracking down one with proper accreditation was a dicey endeavor at best. Now, online universities have reached a certain level of legitimacy, but it’s still important to research the specs on a range of schools thoroughly before filling out your paperwork.

What is an MBA in Organizational Leadership?

When you earn your MBA online, you have options for your specialty. Organizational Leadership is one popular choice, and the graduate course of study combines various disciplines in order to equip students with the management skills they need to tackle real-world situations in the workplace. The program does this by instilling management research knowledge in students that will teach ways to lead an organization on a macro level.

While earning an MBA degree Organizational Leadership is important regardless of whether an organization is dealing with products and services on a small scale or managing employees that are handing a great number of resources. Issues such as employee morale, human behavior, employee relations, and overall company productivity are studied in-depth.

Students will take courses including Leadership Foundations, Group Process and Facilitation Skills, Legal and Ethical Aspects of Organizations, and High Performance Teams. Depending upon the institution in which you enroll, you may be required to take additional courses to fulfill the Organizational Leadership component of your MBA. Most concentrations require that you take somewhere between 15-30 hours of coursework in your concentration, but again, this may vary depending upon your institution of choice.

Is My Organizational Degree Program Legit?

Online schools can be a gamble if you don’t know what to look for in a program. Most schools are transparent about their retention and graduation rates. Check these stats, and if you can’t find them, ask a representative. If the rep is hesitant to give you the info, then you should consider that a big red flag and scout out some alternatives.

Another critical element to look for in an online MBA program is proper accreditation. This speaks volumes for the overall quality of the degree. If it is, find out exactly which entity issues the accreditation. Seek out degree programs that carry the AACSB seal. This is the oldest and largest accreditation board for business schools, and it will carry the most weight with future employers.

If you can’t find an online school that is AACSB accredited, then opt instead for a school that has regional accreditation. You can find out which accreditation applies to you by visiting your state’s department of higher education or the US Department of Education’s official website.

Learning what to look for when choosing an online MBA program is vital to your post-graduation career. Do your homework before spending any money and avoid the headache of a useless degree and the heartache of an empty wallet.
