When starting a business, it is tempting to put on those rose colored glasses and to start minimizing or denying that problems exist. While positive thinking and enthusiasm are important in running a business, you also need to be realistic.
In the business world, the key to fixing a problem is not to deny its existence, but rather to deal with it. It is also important to deal with problems as soon as they are discovere instead of adopting a “let’s wait and see” attitude. The reality of the situation is that problems that are not dealt with can fester and grow. These little problems can then become big problems which can destroy your business as well as your finances. Here are some tips that might help you with your business problems.
The Problem Is The Problem
When trying to solve a problem, it is important to actually determine what the root problem is and then work on a plan of action. For example, you may notice squabbling amongst the employees in a certain area of your business. At first, you may just think that it is personality conflicts and ignore the issue. Upon further investigation, you may find out that the supervisor of the section is not allowing everyone to take vacation time; certain employees are getting their vacations approved while others are not. In this case, the problem is the supervisor, not the employees. A plan of action needs to be created to re-train the supervisor.
Create A Plan
It is important to create a plan of action before problems arise and communicate that plan to your employees. It is also important to create an atmosphere where employees know that they can discuss problems without fearing consequences. When your employees come to you with a problem, it is important to treat them with respect and to deal with the problem that they present. This is important because your other employees will be watching. For example, if one of your employees brings up an issue to you and is treated with respect and her problem is solved quickly, other employees will be likely to come to you with issues. If she is treated poorly, or the issues that she has raised are ignored, then there could be serious consquences.
Training and Education Are Important
One of the best ways to decrease problems at the office is to encourage all employees to take advantage of training and educational opportunities. Although sending employees to seminars may seem like it will decrease business production, actually the opposite is true. Employee who attend such seminars bring new skills and new knowledge back to the work place which can help your business to run more smoothly.
Of course, these are only a few suggestions. No doubt, as your business grows, you will discover many other principles that are important in dealing with problems and turning them into opportunities for growth. Opening a business is like starting a long journe–make sure to enjoy the trip!
