I was recently asked a question by Penny Haynes, multimedia and social media software designer and the creator of the Commercial Creation Centre about which were the most important social media and social networking sites what I use most often and why and if I use distribution services.
Penny asked the questions via the LinkedIn Answers feature and has since asked me to join her on her ‘Talkshoe’ radio show on Monday 1 December 2008 at 4pm ET (9pm Ireland).
You can join us for the conversation by dialling in:

Here is the response I provided Penny - but what would you have said?
“I think it all depends what you goal is for networking on line - just like networking offline it could be for learning/development, business development, research, competitive insights, for social reasons and in the case of online social networking it may be because you want to be found in search engines! And of course there are industry and niche social networking sites.
If you are in a corporate role then I highly recommend LinkedIn, Blip.tv and YouTube for expressing your expertise. I’d also consider Facebook and the opportunity to create a personal profile and professionally pages and groups for your organisation and potentially for running Facebook ads.
I would also consider creating my own social network for example with Ning.com.
I’d create a Twitter account for engagement and reputation management.
I would create a Flickr account to share the back story of my business.
I would use FriendFeed not just for the aggregation but creating rooms specific to different projects - for example I have one for my own community and i.e. for Social Media in Ireland.
I would use Utterli as a place where you can create or upload audio and video and then embed it as a widget or just a single entry into other locations.
I do use distribution services such as Tubemogul, Ping.fm and Hellotxt.com - but try to ensure that where I can, feeds are automated to populate the sites I am active on.
There are many many sites where I personally have a profile, but that’s different to being active - the ones above are my personal favourites - at least for the month of October 2008 - it will be interesting to see if my views have changed in October 2009 - or even January 2009.”
If you can join Penny of I on Monday and share your personal favourite social networking sites, we’d love to hear from you. Or post your comments below.
