The net profit of small businesses rose this year to 6.5%, up significantly from last year, according to a new report from Sageworks Inc., reported in the New York Times.

At the same time, overhead and payroll as a percentage of sales both decreased significantly this year. All three indicators lead Drew. B. White, the chief financial officer of Sageworks to commend owners of small businesses for doing what it takes to survive in the face of a dramatic drop in sales. Sales from the beginning of this year through Sept. 30th have dropped 3.75%.
