“Growing Pains: Is Your Business Software Bringing You Down?”
I wager that you have made the mistake, like me, of volunteering for a job that was waaaaaay more excruciating than you’d ever imagined it could be. My story was to accept the task of migrating my church’s hand-crafted ledger onto Quickbooks. Oh, I thought it would be a breeze; I’d worked in Quickbooks for a while with my own (very simple) business, and couldn’t imagine that the system would not accommodate a very different (non-profit, lots of customers, lots of funds, etc.) business.
Many late night months later, I was ready to give up on God, not to mention Quickbooks. Lately, as our own new business needs are also becoming more complex (and although I no longer have to design or enter data) we are running up against the same frustrations that a lot of global, “outside the mold,” businesses are experiencing.
A recent Small Business Computing article, “Life Beyond Quickbooks,” discusses some of the options available to businesses maturing into the mid-market, but even smaller, niche businesses like ours, which require a higher level of integration or customization, find Quickbooks and other current offerings frustrating.
We’re going to be discussing (bitching allowed!) some of these challenges in the next of our MVP webinars on small business issues. I’m pleased once again to include Barbara Weltman, well-known small business expert and all-round straight-poop advisor, in my panel, and we’re also including Manju Bansal, Director of Solution Marketing, SAP Labs, who’s lived and breathed small business accounting for years. We’ll be presenting our recent findings from TechDirt on what other growing businesses are experiencing, and we’ll be seeking concrete, actionable advice for dealing with these accounting and business system problems.
Here’s what you can do… pile on now. Let us hear from you before the web event: give us your comments and questions and we’ll start working on them now.
