In the event you have had the itch for a while Imagenow to start your own home business, are you ready to pull the trigger on such a move?

With the national unemployment rate still hovering around 8 percent, and with many Americans having given up the search for work, the timing could be right to give a home business a shot. At worst, you can look back and say at least you tried it.

While starting and running a home business comes with a lot of trials and tribulations, the rewards can be worth it. As opposed to traditional businesses, a home-based opportunity is easier to set up due to the fact you do not need much capital to get it off the ground. Also, given it is operated right in your residence, you do not need to pay for the overhead expense of renting an office or even hiring and paying a full-time staff.

So, are you ready to take the plunge and see if a home business is the right decision for you?

If the answer is yes, there are a number of things that you will need to put in place in order for the business to have its best chance of succeeding.

Among them:

* A business plan - Whether you are a major corporation or a small mommy business, you need a plan in place. What kind of funding will you need to start a home business? What are the tax implications of such a move? Will you be bringing on any part-time or full-time staff to help you run things? How do you plan to advertise your home-based business? Do you have any credit issues in the event you need to borrow some money to get the business off and running? These and other questions will need to be answered before you hang the shingle out to let people know you are open for business;

* Know your potential customers - As you set out on your new business venture, not only is spreading the word important, but also just who you will be going after in the first place. Have you done a market analysis of your particular industry you will be specializing in? Given the current state of the overall economy, are there any major concerns to opening a home business in your particular niche? What are the particular needs of potential customers in your industry and can you meet them? Make sure you go into your home business with know blinders on, meaning know where your return on investment (ROI) is going to come from;

* Understand your competition - If you are setting up a tax business in your home, how many other similar businesses are there in town? If such companies are few and far between, then you stand a good chance of gaining clients. If, however, there are several such businesses in town, how will your company stand out from the rest of them? Know the local marketplace in order to stand the best chance of succeeding;

* Advertising - Any solid home business will be one that spreads the word about what it has to offer consumers. So, how will you go about this? You can do traditional print and on-air advertising, but that will cost you money. Utilizing social media and other online sources to promote your new business will be cheaper, but that will take time and effort on your part. You should also use word-of-mouth through family, friends, and current or past co-workers that you are on good terms with. Lastly, be sure that your advertising efforts are consistent, as doing it here and there is rather ineffective. You need to continuously put your business name out there so that it sticks and resonates with consumers;

* Legalities - Last but not least, make sure your home-based company has all the I's dotted and the T's crossed before you open for business. In the event you will be having clients come to your residence to conduct business, also make sure that you are covered from an insurance stand point. The last thing you want is a customer being injured on your property, then turning around and suing you, only to discover you were not properly insured. Also check to see what the local zoning and city/town tax regulations, etc. are in order to operate a business from your residence.
