Geoffery Moore wrote two excellent books - (Crossing the Chasm) and (Inside the Tornado) which revolutionzed how marketing was done especially for high tech company. I tried to map his findings to the mobile revolution we are in the midst of. Are we in the chasm? Or have we crossed it and are we inside the mobile tornado?

And the answer I think, as with many other things, is that it depends. It depends on which mobility segment are we talking about - enterprise mobility, ebooks. mobile games?

Enterprise mobility, I feel is still in the "early adopters" stage - that is some companies have embraced enterprise mobility but there is still a wide chasm that we need to cross to get to "early majority". Just a couple of years (months?) ago there was a lot of resistance from business IT departments to allow private devices to access corporate data. But, that has changed and will business IT will continue to open up and key to crossing the chasm here may be manageability and tracking of device.

Ebooks have become very popular this year and clearly we have crossed the chasm on ebooks. Harper Collins recently reported that ebooks accounted for 19% of their US Sales and 11% of worldwide sales. Big numbers indeed!

Gaming apps, on the other hand and well into "early and late majority" phases. Everyone has that new version of "Angry birds" on their mobile devices. One can argue that even within this category there may be other sub-categories that have their own chasms. Take for example, augmented reality game apps.

Clearly, the mobile market has some many different segments and each of these segments is undergoing a sea change. It is difficult to put a finger and say "now there, we have crossed the chasm on that one".

Is the above assessment correct?
