7 Wireframe Tools to Mock Up Your Next Web Project

Wireframe tools provide an excellent platform from which to design high-quality software and websites. Without a wireframe, you’re likely going to run into problems with the design, with errors becoming costly as they progress. Avoiding those errors is paramount to the success of your project, so we’ve put together this list of seven wireframe tools to mockup your next web project. Happy coding!

1. Adobe Illustrator

If you’re looking for a trusted name in the design industry, Adobe is it. With many design tools available in the Adobe Creative Cloud, you’ll have access to photo editing, video editing, UX/UI design and mockup tools, and more.

Adobe has made a name for itself with its powerful tools, and Illustrator is one of the best as far as UX design. Creating a wireframe is simple with these programs, and they’re included in your Adobe subscription.

2. UX Pin

Ux Pin is a great tool for those just learning how to create effective wireframes. It allows for simultaneous collaboration, much like Google Docs. You and your team can edit within the same document at the same time, making not only learning but creating a much more collaborative process. Real-time edits and conversation help create more efficient development projects.

Ux Pin can also read Photoshop files, so your graphics can be easily integrated into the prototype by simply uploading your files. With great design tools and collaboration that’s simple and simultaneous, Ux Pin is a powerful tool you’ll want to try out for your next design.

3. Proto.io

This cloud-based app is generally used for its prototyping capabilities, but it can also be used as a standalone wireframe tool. This great tool also allows for many users to access the same file at the same time, so collaboration is never an issue here.

Proto has an excellent UI testing interface, so you can be sure that the elements of your project will work accordingly before you send them off to be hardcoded. Remember that all great wireframe tools have easy hand-off capabilities, and Proto definitely shines here. You can even work with your project all the way up through high-fidelity mockups to prototyping in the same program.

The tool does provide a free version with limited access, but if you want the full features of the software, you’ll need to sign up for a subscription.

4. Moqups

When it comes to the most basic wireframe tools, Moqups is a step above the simple flow-chart-esque versions. While simple flow charts and idea-connecting wireframe tools are effective in certain conditions, sometimes you need something that has more features to effectively map out your ideas.

Moqups will allow you to easily create a static wireframe for whatever project you’re working on, so you can easily identify errors or changes before you send the final mockup to the development team. Moqups is billed monthly, so it’s not free, but it does offer better features than your simpler wireframing tools.

5. Affinity Designer

If you’re not a fan of Adobe products, you can choose this excellent alternative to tools like Adobe Illustrator. While it may lack some of the best features of Illustrator, Affinity doesn’t have quite as large a price tag and can be used on either Mac or Windows machines.

The software is a little less bulky than Adobe’s products as well, so your hard drive won’t be quite as bogged down. Not to mention, Affinity feels a lot like Illustrator, but only costs $49.99 to purchase forever. A great design tool for under $50? We think that’s definitely worth a look.

6. Axure RP

Axure is one of the most widely used wire frame tools out there, with cloud-based storage and collaboration tools that set it apart from the competition. Not to mention, Axure offers powerful prototyping tools, so you can take your designs all the way from conception and wireframing to high-fidelity mockups and prototypes.

The software is easy to use, looks great, and performs incredibly well. In fact, Axure is one of the top design tools out there. Axure is priced per user per month, with the “Team” package starting at $49 per user per month. This allows for free hosting on the cloud and great collaboration tools to make projects efficient. Overall, Axure is a powerful, streamlined design tool that has everything you need to create high-quality development projects quickly and efficiently.

7. Invision Studio

While Invision is a Mac-only tool, it’s still a force to be reckoned with. The software isn’t very old, with the beta released only last year in 2018. This addition to the Invision product lineup allows its users to stay completely within the Invision lineup of products for the duration of the design process, instead of designing within Sketch or some other program and uploading the files to Invision.

With Freehand, you’ll be able to collaborate with your team in real-time, so communication is simple and instantaneous. This powerful tool helps unite your team, giving each member a voice that can be instantly heard and realized on-screen.

Invision is free for up to one prototype. If you need more than one, you’ll have to pay a monthly subscription fee, which starts with a three-prototype plan that runs around $15/month. Overall, the app’s amazing interface, compatibility and collaborative tools, and price range make it a contender for one of the best wireframing tools available on the web.
