Are Gaming Chairs Better Than Office Chairs?

Science tells us that sitting in a fixed position for long periods doesn’t do our health any favors. However, in this current age of technological disruption, it’s normal to sit in front of a screen for hours on end.

So, what kind of chair should you choose for prolonged periods of screen-based sitting: a gaming chair or an office chair? Let’s break down the distinctions between these two chair types so that you can have a better idea which option is right for you.

Gaming Chair vs. Office Chair: The Differences

There are more than a few ways to tell apart a gaming chair from an office chair and vice versa.

1. Design

Taking a closer look at the designs of both the gaming and the office chair, you’ll notice that they’re quite different. For one, gaming chairs sport a look with the “coolness” factor in mind, so they’re almost always guaranteed to grab your attention from the get-go.

On the other hand, office chairs are designed for comfort and function. They’ll look like something you can sit on for hours and get a lot of work done without hurting your back.

For the most part, these statements are true. Still, there are gaming chairs that stand out more for their ergonomic-office-chair-like features than their conventional racing-style-gaming-chair attributes. In the same way, office chairs also come in more designed-focused models as opposed to the traditional ergonomic-centered pieces consumers are used to.

In general, though, cool designs continue to be the main selling point for gaming chairs, while ergonomics remain the most sought-after feature for office chairs.

2. Comfort Levels

An area where gaming chairs seem to have trouble catching up with office chairs is in the comfort department. They simply aren’t as awesome to sit on when you’re working for long hours in the office.

Of course, this isn’t entirely true. As you peruse the vast array of gaming and office chair options in the market, you’ll discover that some gaming chairs do hold their own against their office-used counterparts when it comes to comfort.

The idea that gaming chairs are less comfortable than office chairs usually arises from situations when ordinary gaming chairs are compared to high-end office options. People may recommend you get an upscale office chair that’s guaranteed to be more comfortable than your current gaming chair, but this could set you back up to a thousand bucks.

Realistically, from a similar price range, there isn’t too significant of a difference between gaming chairs and office chairs when it comes to comfort.

3. Cost

On a typical basis, you’ll need to put in more money on a gaming chair than you would on an office chair. Of course, this isn’t to say that a gaming chair automatically costs more than an office chair.

For example, gaming chairs belonging to the top tier typically won’t exceed $800, but the majority of high-quality gaming chair options will fall within the $300 to $500 range. The best of the best office chair options, though, can cost a staggering $1500. That’s nearly double the price of their gaming-chair equivalents and more than triple the cost of typical high-end gaming chair options.

So, where the upscale market is concerned, office chairs have clearly more bank-breaking tendencies than gaming chairs. Where the gaming chair typically gets a beating for its price is in the low to mid-range price scope. A $140 office chair will usually remain a functional sitting option for a couple of years, but a $140 gaming chair may not even last half that long with its cheap materials.

4. Adjustability

The final consideration you want to make when choosing between these two chair options is adjustability. Adjustment options can range from armrest and backrest to height and base-tilt. These are typically what you’ll find in most of the gaming chairs saturating the market.

Still, it’s difficult to pick a stand-out between gaming and office chairs in this area. That’s because adjustment features can vary depending on the chair’s design.

In most cases, though, office chairs have fewer adjustment options than similarly-priced gaming chairs. This has a lot to do with the inclusion of the recline feature in gaming chair options, which is usually missing from office chairs. Even gaming chairs at the lower end of the price spectrum typically have the recline feature.

So, Which Will It Be: Office Chair or Gaming Chair?

Ask yourself: Does it matter whether I use an office chair or gaming chair for gaming? If it doesn’t, then you’d be better off using an office chair. You can get one on the lower end of the price spectrum, and it’ll be a viable sitting option for a few years.

On the other hand, if you’re particular about using a cool, racing-style chair in front of the screen, get one that has garnered excellent reviews. This may typically mean getting one of the pricier gaming chair options, but it’ll certainly be worth it.
