This should come as no surprise to many, because if you’ve ever felt sad, upset, or angry at work, you know how much your productivity suffered.
Learning how are stress balls made isn’t necessarily going to solve any employee unhappiness problems, although stress balls certainly give jacked up workers an outlet to release their anxiety. No, offering resources to help boost employee spirits is definitely the right move to make. By investing a little in your employees, you’ll hopefully be able to achieve much bigger returns. But you’ll never find out if this is true unless you try some of the tips we’re about to share with you below. So that’s what we suggest you do.
Tip #1: Ask Your Team for Regular Feedback
When your employees have your back and really care about their jobs, they will know the ups and downs and ins and out of your business, maybe even better than you do. A simple way to increase employee happiness is to talk to the team and get their feedback regularly.
As an example, let’s say you recently implemented a new employee workflow. You obviously made this change in an effort to increase productivity. Does it appear to be working? If so, ask your employees if they are happy with the new system. Ask them if they have any feedback they can offer to help improve the new system to ensure everyone is happy with the new workflow design and implementation.
Now take time to listen to each and every one of your employees. Pay attention to their feedback and see if you can discover ways to improve business functions and processes. By listening to their answers, you’ll make your company more efficient, your employees will feel like their input really matters – because it does – and everyone will be a lot happier because of this experience.
Always ask your team for regular feedback as often as you deem fit. If you recently changed the company health insurance plan, ask your employees if they are happy with the new changes. If not, do your best to accommodate everyone, even though this isn’t always going to be possible. Sometimes employees have to learn to live with changes even if they aren’t what everyone was hoping for.
Tip #2: Give Employees the Opportunity to Work on Special Projects
This may not be applicable to every business model, but when it’s relevant, allow your employees to work on special projects that they’ve always wanted to attempt. By giving employees this leeway, it will show that you trust them, care about their happiness, and want to see them succeed. It will also provide your company with a new potential revenue stream if the pet project ends up working out. So, this is obviously a potential win-win for the company and the employee in question.
Remember to always be open and honest with your employees. Even if you cannot let certain employees work on special projects, you could always ask their advice about where they feel the company should head. You never know. One of your employees may have an amazing idea that you’d never even thought of, which could potentially lead to a huge new source of revenue for the company.
Tip #3: Let Employees Work Remotely from Home
Depending on your business model, it may be possible to let certain employees work remotely from time to time. In all honesty, does it really matter where and when a team member completes their workday? If not, you should grant certain trustworthy employees the ability to work from home. By giving them this option, it will show that you are flexible in your thinking and willing to go out of your way to make your employees happy.
On the flipside, some employees will need to earn the ability to work from home on occasion. This will incentivize other people to improve their productivity and take on more responsibility so you’ll trust them enough to work remotely in the future.
Or it could create animosity in the workplace. So definitely keep this in mind as well, because some of the employees that aren’t allowed to work from home will resent you and your other employees. This isn’t going to happen every time, but it is a potential pitfall of granting special privileges to some of your employees and not everybody. So it’s something to definitely think about, pay attention to, and see how everything unfolds when you first introduce this new policy.
Tip #4: Cut out Unnecessary Meetings and Other Time Wasters
Your employees are under a lot of stress each and every day, and this is especially true if they have to regularly meet tight deadlines. The last thing they need is to sit in on pointless meetings that hardly accomplish anything. They have bigger fish to fry and better things to do and shouldn’t have to waste their valuable time sitting in meetings that they don’t necessarily need to attend.
If meetings are absolutely necessary, make every effort to quickly get to the point as fast as possible. Try not to make too much small talk, or lose track of the meeting, and make sure everything stays on course.
From another perspective, if your employees are spending more time in company meetings because everybody is laughing, enjoying each other’s company, and having a good time, then you shouldn’t change anything about these conferences. These meetings are probably huge morale boosters that many looks forward to, so try not to change a thing in this situation unless everyone is struggling for time and they need these meetings cut shorter.
